We’ve got some great drink specials for the event.

From 7 to 10pm, we will have hot drink specials:

Also, it will be Happy Hour until 8pm and draft beers are $3, well cocktails are $4.

Come join the Fun Committee along with members of the Pinewoods Folk Music Club for our December tradition of a pub night/sing. No auditions, no requirements, just a ton of fun. The event takes place on December 11th from 7-10 at Bar 4 (444 7th Ave. btw 15th and 16th St. Park Slope, Brooklyn, 718-832-9800). There will be music-themed drink specials for attendees. Feel free to bring an instrument, but no instrument is needed to join in and raise voices and hearts. It will be a rousing evening of holiday cheer, celebration and plain fun. Join in! Public event, open to everyone, no reservation required. Come lift your voices and your glasses in celebration!

The fun committee will be hosting a “Singles Mingles” evening event at the Coop in the 2nd floor meeting room on Saturday, November 12th from 7 to 10pm. Space is limited, so reservations are required by emailing: ParkSlopeSinglesMingles@gmail.com . Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite dish for a pot luck style grazing. They should also bring several copies of their favorite recipe to share. Number tags will be matched up with the dish and person, so that people can find the cook! Live music will be performed by fun committee members. (21 and over).

Our 2nd Annual Band Nite at Jalopy!

Come join us for a night of music and fun at the Coop’s 2nd Annual Band Nite Friday, April 29tth @ Jalopy Theatre, starting at 8:00pm. Admission is $5. This event is open to all, so invite your non-coop friends! The theatre sells beer, coffee, tea and other delicious items. Click on any underlined section of this post for more info.

We asked the bands playing on April 29th to describe their musical style in a few of their own words:

Joyous, melodic, entrancing: these begin to describe the ever-shifting music of Mixed Nuts. They hail from the Institute of Contemporary Living’s Milestone Residence in deepest Queens. Though embracing disparate influences – rock, pop, gospel, jazz, Latin, blues – they bond by creating exuberant, entertaining and thoughtful new music together. They paint a portrait from the other side. Wash those gray stains away and revel in the ride!

Sounds of Greg D is a Brooklyn-based group performing the songs of Greg Di Gesu. This is straight-ahead good songwriting, very musical and equally lyrical. Performances are rooted in the moment by a band taking chances, delivering songs with a great vibe, and keeping a solid feel. With the success of their Get Hooked Records debut release, “My Little Monkey Got Caught”, band members have been enjoying local drink discounts and a sweet mini-van in each driveway. www.gregsounds.com

The Angel Band Jam meets every Wednesday at Has Beans to play folk, country and Bluegrass music. Their style is acoustic, raw and exciting, harkening back to the days when entertainment was self-generated.

Mappa Mundi is an experimental band rooted equally in pop and “New” music. Their influences span the chamber music tradition, from baroque and romantic repertoire, to newer, contemporary influences like John Adams and Phillip Glass. Yet they are also a rock band. They blend these sounds with the raucous noise and hook-oriented pop of groups like the Decemberists, Ra Ra Riot, the National, and Radiohead. Their recent EP, And in this Way We Come Unmoored…, exemplifies this experiment, which can only be described as “Chamber Pop”. The Mystery Keys play jangly indie pop songs and garage covers of vintage Latin American hits. The Didge Project

Didge Project is a vibrational awareness organization and music collective that combines the sounds of the didgeridoo with jazz and world music to create meditative sonic environments for dance, yoga, meditation and more. Exploring drones and and east-meets-west approach to composition, Didge Project is made up of didgeridoo player AJ Block, multi-instrumentalist Tyler Sussman, and drummer Chaim Tolwin. Ultimately Didge Project aims to elevate human consciousness through the power of vibration. www.didgeproject.com

Make Valentine’s Day Cards with Us!

Join us in the Coop’s meeting room on Saturday, February 12, for a Valentine’s Day card-making party. We’ll supply glue, markers, and paper, as well as instructions for origami hearts; bring any other art materials you’d like to use. We’d especially welcome donations of buttons, fabric, recycled paper, magazines, newspaper, and cardboard for the event: so use the opportunity to get a jump-start on the spring cleaning. If you can’t make it that afternoon, feel free to drop supplies off at the office. Jason Weiner will gladly take them off your hands. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served, and love songs will be sung.

The scissors will be flying from 3:00-6:00 in the meeting room, which is upstairs next to the office. Family and friends of all ages, members and nonmembers, are welcome. Check out last year’s Valentines for inspiration, then stop by and make your own.

Winterfest Pub Night Sing-Along

Join the Fun Committee and the Folk Music Society of New York on December 19, 2010, from 7–10pm at Bar 4 to sing and jam together in a friendly pub atmosphere, and warm up with hot toddies, spiked apple cider, and hot buttered warm. All welcome. No entrance fee. Come and meet new friends and old!

Cooking in Harmony: Coop’s First Food & Beverage Event

On Sunday October 3, 2010, the Park Slope Food Coop held its first ever food and beverage pairing event, “Cooking in Harmony.” Eleven coop members presented nine dishes of varying cultures and culinary styles. Tastings were paired with a wide variety of wines, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages, and a string quartet led by Martha Siegel provided music.

The 132 attendees were faced with the difficult task of voting for their favorite dish. When the votes were tallied, Grace M. Cho took top honors for her reinvention of the classic bibimbap (pictured below), winning five FTOP work credits.

Other notable dishes included Marietta Abrams Brill‘s Moroccan Tilapia, Helen Castillo‘s Raw Lasagna (below), Megan Devir and Yuichi Seki’s Chorizo Dogs with Grilled Kale Caesar Salad, Ed Erdos and Caroline Forlano’s Chicken Paprikash, Eduardo Gonzalez-Cueva’s Peruvian Stew & Tacu-Tacu, Teri Gorbea’s Stuff Figs with Honey Goat Cheese, Meera Gowda’s Bangalore Beets, and Lisa Grauer’s Root Vegetable Salad with Toasted Hazelnuts and Goat Cheese (featured in top picture). All chefs have generously shared their recipes so that other coop cooks can enjoy their dishes at home.

Food & Wine Event, October 3rd

This fall, the Fun Committee will host its first ever Food & Wine Event at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Sample food prepared by Brooklyn chefs, showcasing the coop’s delicious seasonal ingredients, and vote for your favorites. More details at www.foodcoop.com.

Get Work Credit for Cooking

The Fun-Raising Committee is planning an event in autumn 2010 to show off the coop’s delicious seasonal ingredients and creative cooks. Attendees will sample dishes and matching beverages, and vote on their favorites.

We are looking for 10 talented cooks to present one dish each. If you are experienced in cooking for large numbers of people, we’d love to hear from you.

All cooks must be coop members in good standing.
Each dish must serve up to 200 people.
We are looking for a range of styles and cuisines – vegetarian, ethnic, etc., that reflect the coop’s seasonal bounty.
The coop will supply all necessary ingredients to the finalists.
Professional chefs will help guide and support the cooks, if necessary.
Each dish will be paired with an appropriate beverage (wine, beer, or non-alcoholic).
Participating finalists will receive FTOP credit for the event. The cook serving the most popular dish at the event will earn an assortment of additional gifts.

If you would like to participate, please write to us at psfccook@gmail.com and tell us about your kitchen skills and the recipe you would like to prepare. For people without internet access, submissions may be brought to the membership office and put in Jason Weiner’s mailbox. Submissions must be received by May 30.
